Sustainable Solutions and the Future of Utility Services
Efficiency improvements to our existing building stock represent one of the biggest opportunities to reduce our dependence on foreign energy sources. In addition, electric utilities are challenged to reduce the carbon footprint of their generating plants and maximize the use of existing distribution systems. Maximizing the efficiency of our residential, commercial, and industrial buildings will require investments beyond current utility rebates. New incentives need to be created.
In the early 90s, both BPA and Puget Power (now Puget Sound Energy) created pilot programs to pay for building efficiency improvements at the value of new generation sources. Instead of viewing buildings as simple consumers of energy, facility owners are paid to "generate" energy through efficiency improvements.
In this session attendees will learn:
• What lessons were learned with the Purchase of Energy Savings programs of the 90s
• Why we are reopening conversations about this concept in light of developing Smart Grid and Smart Building technologies
• What the potential impact to building owners and occupants will be in facilities equipped with these "smart" technologies
