9:30am - 11:00am
The State of the Open Source Industry
Raven Zachary, Research Director, Open Source, The 451 Group
Open source remains a disruptive force in the software industry. Having moved beyond its early roots in academia and as a driver for social change, open source is now playing a role in traditional software markets, as a driver of transformation, or in some cases, a source of new competition.
This presentation will take a look at the impact that open source is having on software vendors, end users and the investment community; where it fits and where it still struggles to provide value; the role of commercialization; and the outlook for open source moving forward.
11:00am - 12:00pm
IT Giants and Open Source
Moderator, Andrew Aitken, Managing Principal, Olliance Group
Over the past few years, we have seen a significant increase in open source activity by large IT vendors. What was once a technology movement driven by academia and hobbyists has become a key aspect of business strategy by some of the world's most well-known technology vendors. This panel discussion will include representatives from a number large IT vendors to explore the role that these vendors are having on the growth and maturity of open source, and to what extent these same vendors are having to balance the support and competitive aspects of open source.
1:00pm - 1:50pm
Open Source for the Public Sector
Moderator, Deborah Bryant, GOSCON Chair and Founder
Open source is not just being used to drive business activity. Governmental organizations, non-profits, and educational institutions have all been making use of open source software to reduce costs and increase cross-organizational cooperation. This panel looks at how open source is being used in the public sector, with insight from individuals directly involved in these efforts.

John Mark Walker, Community Manager, Hyperic
Stormy Peters, Director of Community & Partner Programs, OpenLogic
The open source ecosystem functions autonomously and represents a fundamental shift from traditional thinking. Open source really isn't about the applications, it's about the community of individuals that create powerful solutions to common problems. In this panel discussion, key open source leaders will discuss how to understand the fundamental principles of open source and the culture of the open source communities. The panel will also discuss why participation by employees is important to the success of open source projects within your business.
